Recognizing & Obeying the Call of God

“Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” 1 Thess. 5:24

I.  The Mercy-full CALL   (1 Cor. 1:22-31)

The words “call” and “calling” are used in different ways in Scripture, but primarily of our call to __________ with Christ.  cf. 1 Cor. 1:9; Rom. 8:28-30; 2 Tim. 1:9 Paul exhorts the Corinthians to “__________” what they were like when God called them to Himself. cf.  1:22-26 God specifically _________ the foolish, weak & common to “shame” or “nullify” the wise, mighty & noble. i.e.  God chooses those whom the world overlooks He does this to keep proud man from ___________ in himself!”  cf.  1 Cor. 1:29-31; 2:1-5; 2 Cor. 4:7; 12:7-10

II.  The Ministry CALL   (Jer. 1:4-10)

The “word of the LORD” came to Jeremiah at a time of great evil & spiritual _________ in Judah.  (1:1-3) NOTE – “The _______ of the LORD” came to Jeremiah! cf.  Jer. 1:4, 11, 13; 2:1 – 51X in Jeremiah

“The work of the ministry is too demanding & difficult for a  man to enter it without a sense of divine calling.” Warren Wiersbe

God’s prophetic call on Jeremiah’s life was totally ______________! (v. 5)   i.e. “before you were born”

III.  The Macedonian CALL  (Acts 16:6-10)

This is Paul’s 2nd Mission as he & Timothy were being led by the _________ to preach the Gospel & strengthen the Church. cf.  Acts 16:1-7 The Lord made known to Paul through a ________ that there was a great need for the Gospel in Macedonia.

  1. Make Certain – 2 Pet. 1:10
  2. Hold Fast – 2 Tim. 1:13
  3. Be Ready – 2 Tim. 4:2; 1 Pet. 3:15

    Monday, February 14th

    Meditate upon the Sovereignty of God’s Call on your life:

    • Romans 8:28-30

    Note you were “called according to His purpose” and that your calling originated in predestination! Spend time praising God for His gracious choice!

    Tuesday, February 15th

    Meditate upon the Complexity of God’s Call on your life:

    • 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

    Note the words “chosen you from the beginning.”  He called us that we might “gain the glory…”  Wow-Thank God for the “Gospel” that was shared with you!  Pray for 1 Person to share it with today.

    Wednesday, February 16th

    Meditate upon the Uniqueness of God’s Call on your life:

    • 1 Cor. 1:22-31

    How is God’s choice of people He calls different than the world’s?  Why does He do this?  Why did He choose you?  Confess your sin of pride to God!

    Thursday, February 17th

    Meditate upon the Certainty of God’s Call on your life:

    • 2 Peter 1:5-11

    Note the long list of character qualities that are to be “yours and increasing” as a believer.  What does it mean to “make certain His calling?”  Ask God’s Spirit to search your heart & show you your sin!

    Friday, February 18th

    Meditate upon the Mercy of God in calling you:

    • 1 Timothy 1:12-16

    Note that God “put Paul into service.”  Paul said “I found mercy.”  Spend time praising God for all the ways He has had mercy on you in calling & giving you a specific gift and area of service!

    Saturday/Sunday, Feb. 19-20

    Meditate upon the Adequacy of God’s Call on your life:

    • 2 Cor. 2:16; 3:4-6; 1 Thess. 5:24

    Did Paul feel adequate to serve in ministry?  Where did His adequacy come from?  Recommit yourself & your gifts to God for Him to use you today!
