The HEART of a SERVANT
“What It Means to Follow the Master”
Mark 8:34-38
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mk. 10:45
I. The DEMANDS of Discipleship (8:34)
Jesus now addresses the demands of discipleship and the
______ of commitment to follow Him. cf. Mt. 16:24-28
Let’s face it, the greatest ___________ to true disciple-
making is ______ of self! cf. Mt. 19:19; 22:36-40
To “deny” oneself is to give up all our ________ to make
& control our own decisions! cf. Mk. 14:66-72
To “take up his cross,” in N.T. times under Roman rule,
would certainly have meant suffering & ________!
In Luke 14:27, Jesus said whoever doesn’t “carry his own
cross” cannot be His _________! i.e. “not worthy”
cf. Mt. 10:37-38; Eph. 4:1; Col. 1:10; 1 Th. 2:12
Salvation is free (“by grace through faith”), but to be a
______ disciple will cost you everything! cf. Jn. 6:66
II. The LOSING of a Life (8:35-38)
There are essentially 2 Views of Life: (v. 35)
1. The Worldly – “save your life” by putting yourself ___
& live for the here & now! i.e. will “lose your life”
2. The Godly – “lose your life” now by putting ______ 1st
& trusting Him with your present circumstances &
future destiny. i.e. will “save your life” (Acts 20:24)
Notice the supreme motive for a disciple “losing his life”
is for Christ & the __________. cf. 1 Cor. 9:16-23
Jesus then asks two, penetrating questions about the
_______ of life & cut to the core of every person!
“Life is like a coin, you can spend it anyway you want to,
but you can only spend it once.” Charles Swindoll
Never forget that there is eternal ________ for those
who choose to follow Christ! (v. 38) cf. Mt. 19:29
