The HEART of a SERVANT

   “What It Means to Follow the Master”

Mark 8:27-33

             “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to

                serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”   Mk. 10:45                      

 I.  Peter’s CONFESSION   (8:27-30)

Chp. 8 records more miracles of Jesus and the disciples’

hardness of heart & lack of _________ understanding.

i.e.  “Do you not yet understand?” (v. 21) cf. Mt. 16:12

After Jesus had just asked His disciples 8 probing quest-

ions, He now asked a _________ question. (vv. 27, 29)

The answer to this question will determine a person’s

_________ destiny. (v. 29)

Peter, on behalf of the 12 disciples, ________ answered

correctly! (v. 29) cf. Mt. 16:13-20; 19:27; 26:33; Jn. 6:68

Matthew records that Jesus blessed Peter & made it clear

that God had ________ this to him.  cf. Mt. 16:17; Lk. 24

Based on Peter’s “confession,” Jesus said He will build His

________ & give unique authority to the Apostles!

cf.  Mt. 16:18-19; 18:15-18 – “ekklesia”

NOTE – Jesus _______ them to tell this to no one! (v. 30)

II.  Jesus’ CONFRONTATION  (8:31-33)

Jesus now begins to __________ His disciples for His

divinely-ordained suffering, death & resurrection! (v. 31)

cf. Mk. 9:31-32; 10:33-34 Acts 2:22-23; 4:27-28; Jn. 2:19

The miracle of the _______ man (8:22-26) seems to be a

foreshadowing of Jesus “opening” the disciples’ eyes.

Peter had the boldness to take Jesus aside & ________

Him. (v. 32)

The disciples, because of their lack of understanding, did

not comprehend a _______ Messiah!   cf.  Is. 53

Jesus rebukes Peter for being a “stumbling block” & that

his focus was on ______ interests & not God’s (v. 33)

 

Practical Application: When “fishing for men…”

  1. Have the Right Gear – Mk. 8:29; 1 Cor. 1:23; 2:1-2
  2. Know how/where to Reach Them – Col. 4:5-6
  3. Be willing to Persist/Endure – Jn. 4:35; Mt. 9:37
