The HEART of a SERVANT

   “What It Means to Follow the Master”

Mark 7:1-23

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”  Mk. 10:45

I.  The TRADITION of Man   (7:1-13)

The Context is Jesus again being totally flooded with people

needing to be __________. (6:53-56)

At this time, the religious leaders from Jerusalem came to

____________ Jesus about ritual washings. (7:1-5)

cf.  Mk. 2:18, 24; 3:2, 22

Jesus turns it around as He calls them “_____________”

and quotes Isaiah the prophet as proof. (vv. 6-8)

cf.  Is. 29:13; Matt. 23:13-33; 15:12

2 Types of Hypocrisy:

1.  External Religion without Internal Reality (v. 6)

2.  Man’s Rules over God’s Word (vv. 7-13)

The Dangerous Progression begins by “________ ______”

God’s Standards & then substituting Man’s Standards.

In vv. 9-13, Jesus gives an example of how the Pharisees

do it.       i.e.  “honor your father & your mother”

BEWARE of __________ hypocrisy!

II.  The HEART of Man  (7:14-23)

Jesus ___________ the crowd’s attention. (v. 14)

The real issue of spiritual defilement is always on the

__________.  (vv. 15-16)   i.e.  uncleanness

NOTE – The heart of Jesus’ teaching on this subject is

now directed toward His ___________. (vv. 17-19)

God reminded Samuel that man looks at the outward

appearance, but the Lord looks at the ________.

cf.  1 Sam. 16:7

Every possible ______ that fallen man could possibly

commit proceeds directly from our heart! (vv. 20-23)

  3. My Heart – Mk. 7:21-23
