“What It Means to Follow the Master”
Mark 6:1-13
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mk. 10:45
I. Being OFFENDED by Jesus (6:1-6)
Jesus went back to His “hometown” of ___________, and
His disciples followed Him. (v. 1) cf. Jn. 1:46; Mk. 14:67
When Jesus taught in the synagogue, the people were
_____________ because they thought they knew Him.
cf. 6:2-3; Is. 53:1-3 – “Where did He get these things?”
“Familiarity breeds contempt.” Publius (2 B.C.)
The 2 Things that amazed the people were Jesus’ great
_________ & His powerful works! (v. 2) cf. Lk. 2:40,52
Ironically, the people of Nazareth were “offended” by
Jesus which literally means they _________ over Him.
i.e. scandalize cf. Is. 8:14; Rom. 9:32-33; 1 Cor. 1:23
Only 2 Times in the Gospels do we read that Jesus
marveled: 1) At the unbelief of His own people, the
Jews, & 2) At the great faith of a ___________!
cf. Mk. 6:6; Mt. 8:8-12; Lk. 7:9 – Roman centurion
II. Being COMMISSIONED by Jesus (6:7-13)
When Jesus originally chose His 12 disciples, it was so
they would be ______ Him & send them out to preach.
Now He was __________ them out with authority! (v. 7)
An “apostle” is one who is sent on a mission to accomplish
a specific work & to __________ another. i.e. A & a
Jesus’ Pre-Mission Instructions: 1) Simplicity 2) Unity
3) Accountability 4) Dependency 5) Intentionality

As the disciples went out, they were to be marked by a
“______ persistence” as they sought a “man of peace.”
