The HEART of a SERVANT

“What It Means to Follow the Master”

Mark 2:18-3:12

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”   Mk. 10:45

I.  The Question of FASTING   (Mk. 2:18-22)

In Mark 2 & 3, we find Jesus in a series of _________

with the religious establishment.

While Jesus was _________ with Levi & his friends, the

Pharisees had decreed that godly people should fast

twice a week.          cf.  Lk. 18:9-14

The assumption of the Pharisees was that true religion

was a solemn & __________ occasion.   cf.  Mt. 6:16

Jesus, the Bridegroom, came to being joy & ________

not sadness! (v. 19)   i.e.  a Jewish Wedding feast

“(The Jewish Wedding feast) was traditionally consider-

ed to be the happiest week in their lives.”   R.K. Hughes

The Bridegroom being “taken away” foreshadows the

__________ of Christ! (v. 20)

NOTE – Jesus came to introduce the _______, not to

patch up the old!     i.e.  new garment/new wineskins

II. The Question of the SABBATH (Mk. 2:23-3:12)

The Sabbath was a _________ tradition to the Jews.

cf.  Ex. 20:8-11; 31:13-17; Neh. 9:14

The religious leaders & their Jewish traditions made keep-

ing the Sabbath a crushing __________!   cf.  Mt. 23:4

It was lawful to meet one’s _______ on the Sabbath just

as David ate the showbread in time of need. (1 Sam. 21)

The Sabbath was to be God’s merciful provision for man

& Jesus claims to be _______ of the Sabbath. (v. 27-8)

To prove this claim, Jesus again heals a crippled man on

the Sabbath. (3:1-6)      cf.  Mk. 1:21-31; Jn. 5

The word “hard-hearted”(v. 5) to the Hebrew meant a

___________, proud resistance to God’s purposes.

Practical Application

  1. The Bridegroom – Mk. 2:19-20; Mt. 25:10
  2. Fresh Wineskins – Mk. 2:22; Col. 2:16-17; Rom. 7,8
