I. H elping the Hurting (Luke 4:16-21)

Jesus makes it very clear in the Gospels that His ultimate purpose in coming was to “_______ and to _______ the ________.”     cf.  Luke 19:10; Jn. 3:17; 10:10 There was a clear ___________ behind Jesus’ entire ministry.      cf.  Luke 4:16-21 Jesus’ target audience was ordinary people who were hurting and in desperate _________.  cf.  Mt. 5:3 i.e. poor, captives, blind, downtrodden (Lk. 4) Jesus’ earthly ministry was uniquely marked by heartfelt ______________ for those “distressed & downcast.” cf.  Matt. 9:35-38 According to Jesus, the only ones who call on a doctor are those who _______________ they are sick & in need. cf.  Lk. 5:27-32

FYI – God does NOT ________ those who ________ themselves!!

II. E quipping for Service   (Eph. 4:11-16)

The book of Ephesians highlights the doctrine of the __________ and how believers function within it. Ephesians 4 reveals God’s passion for the __________ and ______________ of the Church.  (4:13) In order to accomplish this goal, verse 11 indicates that Christ has given certain ________ to each believer & to the Body as a whole.   cf.  Eph. 2:20; 4:11 The overriding purpose of the leaders of the church is not to _______________, but to “equip.” (4:12) The word “equip” means to repair or __________ (NIV) or complete so as to be used.  cf. 1 Th. 3:10; Col. 1:28 __________________ is a poor substitute for partici-pation in ministry & service!!

Notice the disciples wanted to send the people away.  Thank God for how He faithfully meets your hunger needs and be sensitive to those who are in need around you.

Tuesday, September 14th

Meditate upon the Compassion of Jesus:

  • Matthew 20:29-34

Notice the multitude sternly told the blind men to be quiet.  Thank God for your health & strength and spend time praying for those you know who are struggling physically.  Reach out to them.

Wednesday, September 15th

Meditate upon the Compassion of Jesus:

  • Mark 1:40-45

Notice that Jesus “touched” this leper.  Check out a study Bible on leprosy.  Ask God to move you out of your comfort zone with people.

Thursday, September 16th

Meditate upon the Building Up of the Body:

  • Ephesians 4:12-13

What does it mean to “build up” the Body of Christ? How are you doing that?  Ask God to show you your gift and how best to use it right now.

Friday, September 17th

Meditate upon the Growth of the Body:

  • Ephesians 4:14-16

How vulnerable are you to the trickery & deceit of false teaching & the “winds” of false

doctrine?  Pray for spiritual strength and discernment in your life by the Spirit.

Saturday/Sunday, Sept. 18-19

Meditate upon the Ultimate Purpose of the Church:

  • Colossians 1:28-29

Notice the phrase, “present every man complete in Christ.”  How are you helping to accomplish this purpose in our local church?  Pray for the pastors & elders as they “equip” and be willing to serve!!
