“Knowing Them By Their Fruits”

A Study of the Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23

“By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.” Jesus (Jn. 15:8)

I.  The Meaning of SELF-CONTROL (Gal. 5:22-23)

The fruit of “self-control” is closely related to each of the previous fruit as it helps to properly __________ their expression toward others.    i.e.  “temperate” (KJV) Self-control is the ____________ of one’s self or the restraining of our own passions & appetites.  i.e.  strong Self-control has to do with our ____________ to God & to His command to “walk by the Spirit.”  cf. Gal. 5:16,25 FYI – _______ of these fruit of the Spirit are even possible unless we are controlled by the Spirit! Our Goal should be to ________  in Christ so that our expression of these fruit is “increasing.” (2 Pet. 1:5-8)

“The need for temperance in every aspect of life has never been greater than it is today.” Billy Graham

For pastors, elders & anyone who claims to be spiritually mature, self-control is ___________.  cf. Tit. 1:8; 2:2

II. The Meddling of SELF-CONTROL (2 Pet. 1:5-8)

Jesus expressed self-control in the face of serious ______________.     cf.  Matt. 4:1-11; Heb. 2:18; 4:15 The Apostle Paul “exercised self-control in all things” by “__________ his body” so as to preach the Gospel and not be “disqualified.”      cf.  1 Cor. 9:24-27

Specific Aspects of Life needing Self-Control:

1.  Our Body (physical appetites) – 1 Cor. 6:12; 1 Tim. 4:7

– Gluttony, Laziness, Immorality, Trash Talk

2.  Our Mind (mental habits) – 2 Cor. 10:5; Phil. 4:8

– Lust, Anger, Greed, Envy

In a World lacking restraint where “anything goes,” if there is anyone who has control over their passions & appetites, it should be a ________ in Jesus Christ!

Practical Application:

  1. Good & Bad Fruit – Mt. 7:16-20
  2. Read, Memorize & Pray – Matt. 4:4,7,10; Mk. 1:35
  3. Turn & Flee – Gen. 39:12; 1 Tim. 6:11; 2 Tim. 2:22
