“Knowing Them By Their Fruits”
A Study of the Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23
“By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.” Jesus (Jn. 15:8)
I. The PATIENCE of God (1 Pet. 3:20)
God’s patience is related to His mercy and in the O.T. is translated, “_______ to _________.” cf. Ex. 34:6-7;
cf. Ps. 86:14-15; 103:8; 145:8-9; Nah. 1:3
“God’s patience is the silence of His justice, and the first whisper of His mercy.” Stephen Charnock
The Apostle Paul said that his finding mercy was to _____________ Christ’s perfect patience. (1 Tim. 1:16) The Apostle Peter states that the only reason God has not yet brought judgment on the world is because He is patient and desires all to __________! cf. 2 Pet. 3:7-9 The patience of God tempers His holy _________ and magnifies His gentle mercy! cf. Rom. 2:4; 9:19-23
II. The Fruit of PATIENCE (Col. 3:12-13)
Macrothumia is often translated “long-suffering” and is closely connected to _______ & unity. cf. 1 Cor. 13:4; Eph. 4:1-3; Col. 3:12-13 Patience is Required when we Experience:
1. Oppression – wrongful abuse & mistreatment
2. Provocation – deliberate actions that arouse anger
3. Irritation – faults, failures & personality conflicts
The fruit of patience is most often needed toward those who irritate us & is called “_______________.” cf. Eph. 4:2-3; Col. 3:12-13; 1 Thess. 5:14-15 Patience is also closely related to _______________. cf. Matt. 18:21-35; Eph. 4:2-3; Col. 3:12-13 When “preaching the Word,” we are commanded to “reprove, rebuke & exhort, with great __________ and instruction.” cf. 2 Tim. 4:2-4
Practical Application:
- Good & Bad Fruit – Mt. 7:16-20
- Pray & Wait – Ps. 40:1-2; Jam. 5:7-11; Col. 1:9-12
