Tough Sayings of JESUS in the Gospels

“Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil…” Jesus – Mt. 25:41

I.  The HEAT of HELL

The Context of Matthew 25 is the final ___________ of the sheep & goats that is only recorded in Matthew. The nations are separated and the sheep inherit the kingdom(v. 34) while the goats are cursed to ______! (v. 41)

“This doctrine(of hell) is often neglected because it is dif-ficult to reconcile hell with the love of God.” E. Lutzer

People forget about the justice & _______ of God and are ignorant of the depth of man’s depravity. (Rom. 1:18-19) Hell is a place of eternal, conscious ______________ for the wicked after the resurrection. (Mk. 9:47-Gehenna) Jesus says that hell is a place of _______________ fire. cf.  Is. 66:24; Mk. 9:47-48 – worm does not die Revelation 14:11 says those who worship “the beast” will be tormented with “fire and _____________.” i.e. no rest Unbelievers are “___________”(Mt. 25:41) because they willfully rejected Christ!  cf.  Rev. 20:12; Lk. 12:47-48 Their bodies are miraculously transformed so as to _____ for eternity in the “lake of fire!” i.e.  without burning up


FYI – The “torment” of hell will be __________! cf.  Matt. 25:41,46; Jude 7; Rev. 14:11; 20:10 In Matthew 13:41-42, Jesus throws the “tares” into the “furnace of fire” where there is ___________ and ____________ of teeth! (Mt. 8:12; 13:42; 22:13; 25:30) “Fire causes the greatest pain known to man.” J. MacArthur In Luke 16:19-31, the rich man asks Lazarus to cool his tongue with water, but it is too late, the great _______ has been fixed! (v. 26)   i.e.  “warn my brothers!  No!” 2 Peter 3 says that in the Last Days __________ will come doubting the God’s Word & denying God’s Judgment!

Meditate upon the Sheep & the Goats’ Judgment:

  • Matthew 25:31-46

How often do you think about the coming Judgment?  Do you tend to take God’s Rescuing you from Judgment for granted?  Spend time praising Him for saving you! Tuesday, August 17t

Meditate upon our Deception of the Last Days:

  • Revelation 12:9; 14:9-12

So many people will be deceived into worshiping the Beast and they will be judged for it!  Pray for the Church & for yourself that God would grant you discernment to withstand deception in these Last Days!

Wednesday, August 18th

Meditate upon the Seriousness of Judgment:

  • Luke 16:19-31

Make as many observations as you can concerning Hades and God’s Judgment.  Why did Abraham refuse to warn the rich man’s brothers?  Pray for pagans that you know who are ignoring the Truth of God’s Word.

Thursday, August 19th

Meditate upon the Degrees of Punishment in Hell:

  • Luke 12:41-48

This is a very interesting passage regarding the subject of Judgment.  Vv. 45-48 seem to teach varying de-grees of punishment upon unbelievers.  Pray for God to enable you to be faithful with what He gives you!

Friday, August 20th

Meditate upon the Spirit of Mockery:

  • 2 Peter 3:1-10

Why do you think people are “mocking” God’s Word to-day?  What doctrines are they doubting?  The Key Phrase is “by the Word of God…”(vv. 5,7).  Praise God for His Word being Powerful & True!

Saturday/Sunday, Aug. 21-22

Meditate upon the Coming Judgment of God:

  • 2 Peter 3:8-18

In the face of scoffers & mockers of God’s Word, what is to be our response?  Pray for boldness & courage to proclaim God’s Word & to handle it accurately &to live godly & holy lives in a dark & deceived world!
